January 7, 2009
Hui Xiong, Assistant Professor, Management Science & Information Systems has been selected as an award recipient of a 2008 IBM Exploratory Stream Analytics Innovation Award. His winning proposal is entitled, Exploiting Location Sensing Data for Characterizing Movement Patterns. Xiong’s objective is to explore large-scale fine-grained location traces to automatically discover useful knowledge. Such useful knowledge includes identifying suspicious activities, understanding the behaviors of drivers and understanding the patterns of transportation networks under extreme conditions, which in turn delivers intelligence for real-time decision making.IBM awarded $20,000 unrestrictive gift money to continue Xiong’s work at Rutgers Business School. The award reflects the high quality of the faculty at Rutgers Business School, the only school that delivers the business, science, and technology credentials that global employers demand. The Management Science & Information Systems multidisciplinary curriculum prepares students not only with a sound business background but also with the skills needed to manage significant software development projects and lead teams of information technology professionals engaged in design, analysis, implementation, and service delivery. Professor Xiong's area of research is data mining, with a focus on developing effective and efficient data analysis techniques for emerging data intensive applications. He has published prolifically in refereed journals and conference proceedings (3 books, 20+ journal papers, and 30+ conference papers). He is the co-Editor-in-Chief of Encyclopedia of GIS (Springer, 2008) and is an associate editor of the Knowledge and Information Systems journal. He has served regularly in the organization committees and the program committees of a number of international conferences and workshops, and has also been a reviewer for the leading academic journals in his fields. Dr. Xiong is the recipient of the 2007 Junior Faculty Teaching Excellence Award and the 2008 Junior Faculty Research Award at Rutgers Business School.
