Affinity announces new scholarship for Rutgers students in honor of former board chairman

April 30, 2009

An annual scholarship for Rutgers students was created by Affinity Federal Credit Union, New Jersey’s largest credit union, to honor Richard (Dick) A. Romanowho retired as Affinity’s chairman to the board of directors and is also a Rutgers Business School advisory board member.

The Richard A. Romano Scholarship Award will be given to a first-year, transfer or current Rutgers University undergraduate student who has proven academic excellence and a passion for giving back to the community - a trait illustrated throughout Romano’s career.

“It was only fitting to name a scholarship in Dick’s honor to recognize his countless contributions – both in the credit union world and beyond,” said John T. Fenton, Affinity president and CEO. “He wouldn’t have accepted any other form of acknowledgement.”

“We are honored that Affinity Federal Credit Union chose to provide Rutgers students with a scholarship that pays tribute to Richard Romano, a good friend and loyal supporter,” said Rosa Oppenheim, PhD, Rutgers’ executive vice dean and professor of management science and information systems. “He has generously given his time, expertise and vision to help further Rutgers Business School’s ascent as a leading business school.”
Romano responded with a quote by the late John Anello, founder of the Florentine Opera in Milwaukee, “Service is the rent you pay for the space you occupy in the world.”

Scholarship applications are available at www.affinityfcu.org/scholarship and the deadline for submission is June 30.

The Richard A. Romano Scholarship is an example of the close relationship Rutgers Business School enjoys with the business community offering students opportunities to excel in programs that have a multidisciplinary edge – delivering the business, science, and technology credentials that today’s employers demand.
